Good morning friends,

How are you on this beautiful cloudy Thursday morning?

Yesterday dad and I had a wonderful day at the West Coast National Park. We had a very early start and got up at 4:00am. We left home around 4:45am and returned last night just after 6:00pm. It was a hot day and at one stage I looked and the temperature was 32°C.

I put the new lens to the test and it took a while for me to get use to it in the field. I am use to my 18-200mm and had to get close to get a nice photo. Now with the 70-300mm I have to step back. I got the hang of it later.

I tried to take photos with the tripod but I got super frustrated. I ended up taking photos handheld. For flower and birding the tripod will not do I miss shots and can’t get the right angles. For landscapes yes, then it works perfectly.

I came to the conclusion that I shall use the tripod for my landscape photography, abstact landscape photography, macro photography and SOME flower photography. Also when I have time and only go to the location for the few photos I planned after my recce visit.

Morning Greetings: 20 September 2021

Good morning friends,

How are you on this beautiful cloudy Monday morning? I am feeling real good this morning.

All geared up for my hike to nowhere… Hiking shoes and Camera bag on the back.
My view from the treadmill…
1.2 km done in 16.23min.

Today is my first day back on the treadmill in more than 7 months. I will have to take it extra slow after Covid because I still do get very tired and lightheaded when I am to active.

After watching all those on location photo shoots of the landscape photographers during my sickbed, and realizing that I will also have to carry my camera bag on my back while hiking to get to the perfect spot, I made the decision to start practicing on the treadmill. What better way to start practicing here in the comfort of my own home. I know it is not the same as outdoors in nature, but this way I can at least start conditioning my body. I had on my hiking shoes as well as my camera bag. I did not “walk” far this morning. Only 1.2km according to the Treadmill calculations. I walked at a slow speed of 4.39km/h. At around 1km I could feel my shoulders and back. My goal for today was to at least walk 1.2 km under 20 minutes. I did that. Tomorrow I will do it again and maybe push for 1.5km.

It is a Grey morning outside and according to the weather forecast we are having a cold Spring day. A maximum temperature of 15°C is predicted. It is a going to be another windy day….

On my To-Do List for today

  • Hike 1.2km to nowhere🏞️ on treadmill✔
  • Start editing pageant photos👸

  • Continue categorizing Flower photos.🌹🌸🌼🌻

Morning Greetings: 18 September 2021

Good morning friends,

How are you on this beautiful sunny Saturday morning?

I woke up just before 7:00am this morning. I have this itch to go out and take my 70-300mm lens for a spin. I will go and set up in the garden, or what is left of it anyway and see if I can catch some birds eating…. I tried to repair the one bird feeder but only had the bottom part spare. But at least I can feed them until I get a new one.

I have a new project over the next 2 years. I want to try to go out at least once every 2 weeks and photograph flowers at different locations. I have been categorizing my flower photos and want to make a series of flower photo books. . This is a huge project for me and I have been taking photos of flowers since 2010. Now I have the task to put it all into files. On some I would have to add the location and date taken. These days I do that from the beginning when I start sorting them. Ans then of course I have to also put down the exif data for the book. Still not sure how I am going to do this in my filing system.

It is a beautiful morning outside and according to the weather forecast we are having a warm Spring day. A maximum temperature of 25°C is predicted.

On my To-Do List for today

  • Take photos of birdlife in garden
  • Continue sorting through photos and delete doubles and unwanted ones.
  • Continue categorizing Flower photos.

Morning Greetings: 16 September 2021

Good morning friends,

Hope everyone is still in good health.

This morning I went out in the garden and tested my new 70-300mm lens on manual focus with a 2sec timer on a tripod using live view and my cable remote. Well I am still struggling to getting the hang of this manual focus and the fact that I must take off my glasses to see on the screen in very irritating. I uploaded all 10 photos and as I looked at it I deleted them one by one. They were all out of focus 😭 I never shoot on live view or with manual focus and I had much better results when I looked through the viewfinder and autofocus. But I am not going to give up. I will try again and again and again…… Until I master the art of manual focus. I think I must start on larger subjects and not flowers and also when it is not that windy. If I want my photos to be sharp and of better quality I will have to get outside of my comfort zone.

I have also ordered some ND grad filters for my camera. Not the expensive ones for now. At least I know that many landscape photographers started out using the cheapies to get the hang of it and that it will give a purple cast to my photos. But I am not going to spend hundreds of Rands on filters that I will never use. So these cheapies will give me an indication of what I really need here in the South African light.

I am also getting together a list of things I will need on my own landscape photography expeditions. For now it will only be a few hours hike at a time. I will have to get use to the bag on my back and not having my camera in my hand the whole time. Safer for me as well as my camera. I will also have to decide that I am only going to capture landscapes and not flowers, birds, insects and everything around me. This will end up making an 1 hour hike a 5 to 6 hour hike…. This is going to be the most difficult part of getting use to only capturing landscapes on a given day. The thing with flowers is they are here today but will they be there a week from now…. That is my dilemma. But it all comes down to choices that I will have to make, careful planning, and getting to know my new surroundings.

Photography is such a great career with so many opportunities. I can’t wait to get started on my photography assignment but first I need to get all better and a bit fitter than I am currently are. From Monday morning 20 September 2021 I will start walking on my treadmill again. And I am going to start with my Camerabag on by back with my hiking shoes. Don’t worry I will start slow and increase my my time and tempo over time. I do realize that walking on a treadmill and walking outside in the elements and in nature is not the same, but this will at least help me getting fitter a bit faster.

It is a beautiful cool morning outside and according to the weather forecast we are having a cold and windy Spring day. A maximum temperature of 16°C is predicted.

Morning Greetings: 14 September 2021

Good morning friends,

Hope everyone is still in good health.

Shadow is growing more confident each day. Yesterday evening he even jumped on the bed for a few minutes while Willow was sleeping on the couch. He is still not at comfortable being in the same room as Willow but at least he is coming in on his own. Willow stretched out and Shadow darted for the door. One day we will all live happily in harmony together…. This is one of my biggest wishes I put out there in the Universe.

Yesterday I realized that I need to get started on my Landscape Photography Portfolio. I have to put all this information and techniques to good use.

To do this I will have to start getting to know the different hiking trails around here and scouting for possible photo opportunities in the future. I will do these exploring expeditions over weekends when Morné can join me. I am still not sure what I am going to do on the day of the shoot though if it is over a weekend it is fine, but during the week it will mean I will have to go alone. I am not afraid to go alone on a hike, but to be honest these days it is not safe at all. I will have to get myself a bodyguard for the days when I go hiking alone.

It is a beautiful cloudy cool morning outside and according to the weather forecast we are having a cold and windy Spring day. A maximum temperature of 15°C is predicted.
