Good day friends,

Today we go back to 12 September 2013 and continue our drive through the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

This was the most action we saw in the park since the Blou Wildebeest fighting. I came across a Cheetah eating a Oryx carcass. At first I did not see the rest of the family hiding behind the bushes, but they soon showed themselves when a Black Backed Jackal made its appearance.

Well what can I say the photos will speak for themselves. All that I can add is the Jackal did not go away, it hanged around for a while. We had to move on because there was a few vehicles piling up behind me also wanted to see what I spotted.

Good day,

Well, today we are going back to 12 September 2013 when we visited The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. We got up just after 4:00am that morning and we left around 5:00am. It was about a 3 hour drive to the park from Upington. I did not know the road and I remember that it was very dark and cold that morning. We were so excited about our visit to the park that it felt like we were driving forever.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a large wildlife preserve and conservation area in southern Africa . The park straddles the border between South Africa and Botswana and comprises two adjoining national parks:

  1. Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa
  2. Gemsbok National Park in Botswana

The total area of the park is 38,000 square kilometers (15,000 sq mi). Approximately three-quarters of the park lies in Botswana and one-quarter in South Africa. Kgalagadi means “place of thirst.”  In December 2015, media reports claimed that rights for gas-fracking in more than half of the Botswana portion of the park had been sold. The Botswana government later refuted these reports.

The park is located largely within the southern Kalahari Desert. The terrain consists of red sand dunes, sparse vegetation, occasional trees, and the dry riverbeds of the Nossob and Auob Rivers. The rivers are said to flow only about once per century. However, water flows underground and provides life for grass and Camelthorn trees growing in the river beds. The rivers may flow briefly after large thunderstorms.

The park has abundant, varied wildlife. It is home to large mammalian predators such as Lions, Cheetahs, African Leopards, and Hyenas. Migratory herds of large herbivores such as Blue wildebeest, Springbok, Eland, and Red Hartebeest also live and move seasonally within the park, providing sustenance for the predators. More than 200 species of bird can be found in the park, including Vultures and raptors such as Eagles, Buzzards, and Secretary birds.

Augrabies Falls National Park: 2013-09-11

We continue our walk at the main falls. Before we head out to explore the rest of the park by car.

I just loved the different colors of the stones and rock formations, and how smooth some of it was because of the friction when the water masses pass through.

Today we are continuing our walk through the main area of the park. We headed to the main falls, but was very disappointed when we saw it. Although it was still beautiful it was not as spectacular as the brochure and the photos on the internet. I asked one of the guides where the main fall is and he showed me to it. He could see the disappointment on my face and told me that if I want to see it in all its glory we must return in January…. So the Augrabies Falls National Park is back on my Bucket list.

Augrabies falls

This is where the mighty Orange River is at its most impressive as it thunders its way through a ravine and cascades down into a pool walled by sheer granite, 56m below. Few sights are as awesome or sound as deafening as water thundering down the 56m Augrabies Waterfall when the Orange River is in full flood.

The Falls derived their name from the Khoi word ‘Aukoerebis’ meaning ‘place of great noise’. Essentially a scenic park where Klipspringer and Quiver trees stand in stark silhouette against the African sky, silent sentinels in a strangely unique environment where only those that are able to adapt survive. Do not plan on just nipping in to see the main falls – there is much more to experience in this arid piece of moonscape-like land. Awesome and strikingly beautiful it offers the visitor over 50 000ha of unique riverine ecosystems to explore, with viewpoints from which to survey the dramatic landscape that unfolds below

Today we continue our visit to the Augrabies Falls National Park. It is such a beautiful park and the different colors of the rock formations are just spectacular.

The best part of this visit and Sanparks Tour was the company. I loved traveling with my parents. I miss it a lot.

Today and over the next few weeks we are going back to our visit to the Augrabies Falls National Park on 11 September 2013

Augrabies Falls National Park is a national park located around the Augrabies Falls, about 120 km west of Upington in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. It was established in 1966.

The Augrabies Falls National Park covers an area of 820 km² and stretches along the Orange River. The area is very arid. The waterfall is about 60 meters high and is awe-inspiring when the river is in flood. The gorge below the falls averages about 240 m deep and runs for 18 kilometers. The gorge provides an impressive example of erosion into a granitic basement.
