Grand Tour Of Scotland: Exploring Orkney~ Part 3

Day 6: 16 August 2019 ~ Links Battery

A WWII coast battery known as Links Battery consisting of a twin 6 pounder gun emplacement with engine room, still extant with a 12 pounder bolt ring near by.

Links Battery is situated on a slight promontory about 450m SW of Point of Ness. The concrete and brick gun-emplacement lies between the road leading to Ness Battery and the sea. The engine room for the electricity supply still survives.

The battery is recorded in the Public Record Office files under WO/192/266, which notes that it was armed with two 12 pounders in July 1940, but by September 1940this had been reduced to one twin 6-pounder, with one of the single 12 pounders guns being transferred to Carness Battery in September 1940. One 12 pounder bolt ring has been noted immediately to the N of the gun-emplacement.

Day 6: 16 August 2019 ~ Ness Battery

When we got to Ness Battery after driving a very narrow road next to the ocean it was closed. We were a bit disappointed. I was looking forward to see how it looked and take awesome photos. But when life gives you closed gates you take photos through the fence and the immediate surroundings.

Day 6: 16 August 2019 ~ On Route to Ness Battery

When we got of the ferry I was a bit anxious and disorientated. I just wanted to get out of Stromness with its very narrow roads and to me it looked like one ways only.

Thinking back, I don’t know why I was so anxious. It is not that I am not use to driving in new locations. Maybe it was the excitement. Not sure.

Throughout Scotland I was drawn to the stone walls. I loved photographing them.

I am just very sad that I had to switch to shooting in Jpeg. I always shoot in RAW even for personal use, but I was running out of memory cards very fast and was forced to switch. I did organize with the hosts and hostesses of the places we stayed to use their computers to transfer the files to my external hard drive. But I encountered problems with and did not want to loose my photos. The computers did not recognize my external hard drive. Still not sure why, but next time I am traveling abroad I will rather pack my laptop.

Day 6: 16 August 2019 ~ On the Ferry from Scrabster to Stromness – Part 3

Not far from Hoy it started raining again and I had to continue shooting from inside the ferry through the windows. In the following photos we are approaching Stromness on Orkney Island.

Grand Tour Of Scotland: Scrabster to Stromness ~ Part 2

Day 6: 16 August 2019 ~ On the Ferry from Scrabster to Stromness – Part 2

Old Man of Hoy

The Old Man of Hoy is a 137meter sea stack on Hoy, part of the Orkney archipelago off the north coast of Scotland. Formed from Old Red Sandstone, it is one of the tallest stacks in the United Kingdom. The Old Man is popular with climbers, and was first climbed in 1966. Created by the erosion of a cliff through hydraulic action some time after 1750, the stack is not more than a few hundred years old, but may soon collapse into the sea.

The Old Man stands close to Rackwick Bay on the west coast of Hoy, in Orkney, Scotland, and can be seen from the Scrabster to Stromness ferry From certain angles it is said to resemble a human figure.

Winds are faster than 8 meters per second (18 mph) for nearly a third of the time, and gales occur on average for 29 days a year. Combined with the depth of the sea, which quickly falls to 60 meters, high-energy waves on the western side of Hoy lead to rapid erosion of the coast.

The Old Man of Hoy is a red sandstone stack, perched on a plinth of basalt rock, and one of the tallest sea stacks in the UK. It is separated from the mainland by a 60-meter chasm strewn with debris, and has nearly vertical sides with a top just a few meters wide. The rock is composed of layers of soft, sandy and pebbly sandstone and harder flagstones of Old Red Sandstone, giving the sides a notched and slab-like profile.
