Some information about Calvinia I got from the Calvinia Hotel’s website.

When entering the Calvinia Hotel, visitors are still welcomed with true warm country hospitality.

The Hotel offers 25 rooms all with en-suite showers & bathrooms, a Splash Pool to cool off in the summer heat, Conference facilities for up to 80 pax, a Beer Garden, Secure parking and Restaurant & Bar which is currently independently owned and operated.

Formed in 1851 on the Oorlogskloof River and named after religious reformer Johan Calvin, Calvinia lies at the foot of the dolerite-topped Hantam Moutains. “Hantam” being a Khoi word meaning “ where the red bulbs grow”. It is the region’s key growth point and one of the country’s largest wool-producing areas.

The Calvinia Hotel was formally known as the Hantam Hotel and in the olden days The Royal Hotel. On Wednesday 28^th April 1926 a banquet was held in the Royal Hotel in honour of the visit of the Earl of Athlone and HRH Princess Alice to the town. The menu and dance programme of this occasion are displayed in the reception area of the Hotel. During 1994, part of the Hotel was destroyed by fire, but rebuild in 1995.

This is a land where, 250 million years ago, prehistoric dinosaurs tread the earth, leaving unique flora, fauna, geology and paleontology in harmonious concord with the infinite universe … truly a place with room for all. Life in this picturesque town seems to be going slower than elsewhere, giving you time for the more worthwhile things in life.

Here you are welcomed like the prodigal son, and treated like a local from the outset. The friends you quickly make in this town will go out of their way to accommodate you with almost any request you may have. Here you easily forget about traffic jams, and other perils of modern life. The lasting first impression is one of calm sophistication.

The reserve is also a proclaimed bird sanctuary with more than 65 bird species, such as the fairy flycatcher, the black-headed canary, and layard’s tit-babbler. The best time to visit the reserve is during flower season in September.

There are two hikes across the Hantam Mountain, one being relatively easier than the other. You can expect to spot the endangered sterkboom as well as the magnificent star tree which is unique to the region. Visitors can also enjoy a picnic and relax within the stunning scenery. The reserve is open daily and there is no entrance fee.

Calvinia is situated in the region known as the Hantam and is also near the Hantam Mountains.  The town itself was established during 1848 and named after John Calvin.
