The typical Namaqualand vegetation which occurs in the Goegap Nature Reserve consists mainly of a large component of plants with a short life-span. These plants change the weld to a multicolored carpet of flowers for a few weeks each year. Where a mass of flowers occur in only one or two colors it usually indicates that the veld was disturbed.

In 1990 this area was proclaimed as the Goegap Nature Reserve. The name “Goegap” is derived from the Nama word for Waterhole.
The reserve incompasses the typical granite koppies and sandy plains of Namaqualand. This semi-desert area has an erratic and uncertain winter rainfall of between 80 and 160mm per annum. Day-time temperatures vary from a minimum of below 10 degrees to a moderate 25 degrees with summer temperatures between 30 and 40 degrees with a maximum of 48 degrees.

Some background information that I got from the brochure we got at the main gate.
Goegap Nature Reserve is situated about 15 km south-east of Springbok in the Namaqualand and covers approximately 15 000 ha.
The Reserve was established in 1960 when the O’kiep Copper Mining Company donated 4 600 ha agricultural land to the Cape Provincial Administration for the development of a wild flower reserve. In 1966 the Hester Malan Wild Flower garden was opened by the Administrator of the Cape, Dr Nico Malan, in honor of his wife. The reserve was later enlarged when the farm Goegap was bought by the Chief Directorate of Nature and Environmental Conservation and added to the reserve.

Coreen10 September 2013: Goegap Nature Reserve
We visited Goegap Nature Reserve 12km outside Springbok en route to Upington…. We could only do the circle route because we don’t have a 4×4 vehicle. Next time I am going in a 4×4. They were busy upgrading the parks reception area and everything was closed. Not that it mattered we were there to take in nature not to shop…
The lady at the gate told us that the route will take about 40 minutes… Fat chance that is going to happen with me and my dad in the car. We made this 40 min drive a 2 hour drive. Stopping and taking landscape photos and don’t forget every flower that we find interesting or beautiful.
These photo’s was taken when we just entered the park.

In the middle of the main road of Sprinbok there is a big traffic circle. The space in this circle was used to make a garden and they build a memorial in commemoration of all the heroes and heroines of the Namaqualand uprising from 1798 to 1799. It is a beautiful garden with all of the flowers, trees and succulents that are indigenous to Namaqualand. Here are some more of the beautiful trees and flowers in the garden. We left Springbok to go to the Goegap Nature Reserve 12km outside Springbok…

The morning of the 10th we went to the Wimpy for breakfast and then I wanted to take some photographs of the buildings in Sprinbok before we leave for Upington. All the buildings opposite the Klipkerk in Church Street was painted White and the trimmings was yellow. I especially liked this white and yellow guesthouse with it’s boat theme…

When we arrived at our overnight destination in Springbok we did some exploring and took some more photo’s of flowers and our surroundings. After our walk I went to our host and ordered some coffee and Mom and Dad was looking at the photo’s taken by Dad on the day… Later that evening we went into Springbok for Dinner and after dinner we sat and talked about the day and all the beautiful flowers we saw. We also checked the weather to see what the following day was going to look like. We were heading to Upington on the 10th but first we wanted to visit Goegap Nature Reserve just outside of Springbok.

When we arrived at our overnight destination in Springbok we did some exploring and took some more photo’s of flowers and our surroundings. When we got to our location my mom slipped and fell on the stairs on our way up to the little cottage. Luckily she did not hurt herself. Even after the fall she still came exploring with us.
