Grand Tour Of Scotland: Exploring Orkney~ Part 5

Day 6: 16 August 2019 ~ Stromness Museum

Stromness Museum is the museum of The Orkney Natural History Society.

It was officially instituted on the 28th December 1837 for the promotion of natural science by the support of a museum and by any other means in its power […] with specimens in Natural History and Antiquities from any other quarter.

The Society’s First Annual Report listed 118 ordinary members, who each paid an annual subscription of two shillings, a relatively small sum which allowed the membership to be accessible to all classes of society. Even with the modest subscription rate, at the first year of the Society’s existence, they reported that “the funds, so far from being embarrassed, have more than met the museum’s outlays”. The Society’s main cost at this time was the lease on the Museum’s first home, ‘Mrs Flett’s large room’ in 110 Victoria Street, next door to the Subscription Library. This space cost the Society two guineas per annum in rent and would be their base for the next seventeen years.

The Society then moved into temporary accommodation in the grand premises of Captain A. Flett’s Commercial Hotel at 69-73 Victoria Street. They had ‘a large and spacious room’, but it was soon clear that they would need a permanent home for their collections. With the support of the Magistrates and Town Council, the current premises at 52 Alfred Street were built in 1858. The Museum was officially re-opened on 29th December 1862, initially occupying the first floor only, with the Town Hall below.

In the 1920s the Town Hall was relocated, and offered an opportunity for expansion. The Society bought the Old Town Hall at public auction and were soon able to occupy the ground floor as well as the first, with the new gallery officially opened in February 1931 by the Lord Lieutenant of Orkney. The Museum expanded further in the 1990s, with the addition of the Pilot’s House (No.56 Alfred Street) to the rear of the main building. This was refurbished to house new displays, with new cases and displays in the first floor following soon after, but the Museum has retained its original Victorian character.

Now at over 160-years-old, the current building might again be need of some refurbishment!

Here are some photos I took while dad and I visited the museum.

Thank you very much for taking the time to join me on my travels through Scotland. I hope you enjoyed it just as much as I did.

Day 6: 16 August 2019 ~ Stromness

Stromness is a place shaped by the sea. A safe haven in Viking times, a whaling and herring fishing port, a base for divers and a ferry gateway to Scotland, the town’s maritime heritage is unparalleled.

For visitors, arriving in Stromness with NorthLink Ferries is a special experience; for Orcadians, the twinkling lights of the harbour and the houses are a welcoming sign of home.

Enclosed by the steep Brinkies Brae to the west and the sea to the east, Stromness is a tumbling network of flagstone streets, lanes, piers and slipways. There’s a timeless feel to the town, but its vibrant population ensures that it’s always looking forward. It’s the heart of Orkney’s diving industry, with easy access to the WW1 wrecks in Scapa Flow, and it’s also home to the pioneering renewable energy industry in the islands.

Thank you very much for taking the time to join me on my travels through Scotland. I hope you enjoyed it just as much as I did.

Day 6: 16 August 2019 ~ Links Battery

A WWII coast battery known as Links Battery consisting of a twin 6 pounder gun emplacement with engine room, still extant with a 12 pounder bolt ring near by.

Links Battery is situated on a slight promontory about 450m SW of Point of Ness. The concrete and brick gun-emplacement lies between the road leading to Ness Battery and the sea. The engine room for the electricity supply still survives.

The battery is recorded in the Public Record Office files under WO/192/266, which notes that it was armed with two 12 pounders in July 1940, but by September 1940this had been reduced to one twin 6-pounder, with one of the single 12 pounders guns being transferred to Carness Battery in September 1940. One 12 pounder bolt ring has been noted immediately to the N of the gun-emplacement.

Day 6: 16 August 2019 ~ On Route to Ness Battery

When we got of the ferry I was a bit anxious and disorientated. I just wanted to get out of Stromness with its very narrow roads and to me it looked like one ways only.

Thinking back, I don’t know why I was so anxious. It is not that I am not use to driving in new locations. Maybe it was the excitement. Not sure.

Throughout Scotland I was drawn to the stone walls. I loved photographing them.

I am just very sad that I had to switch to shooting in Jpeg. I always shoot in RAW even for personal use, but I was running out of memory cards very fast and was forced to switch. I did organize with the hosts and hostesses of the places we stayed to use their computers to transfer the files to my external hard drive. But I encountered problems with and did not want to loose my photos. The computers did not recognize my external hard drive. Still not sure why, but next time I am traveling abroad I will rather pack my laptop.
