Lois, I asked the same. I think it is the farmers way of marking his sheep. There are no fences and it looked like the livestock could roam free. That’s just what I think. Maybe it serves another purpose. But I will try to find out.

Why are sheep painted in Scotland?
Farmers “paint” their sheep for identification. … When mating, the ram mounts the ewe and a bit of dye is deposited on the ewe’s upper back. This way, the farmer knows which ewes have been impregnated and moves them on to another field away from the ram.
