Good day friends,<p value="<amp-fit-text layout="fixed-height" min-font-size="6" max-font-size="72" height="80">Over the next few weeks, I am reading, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. Some days I will Quote a page or just give you a summary of what I read and how I understand it. I am just an ordinary person, and I find it interesting how different people see the world. Domestication and the Dream of the Planet: Part 4
” I call this process the domestication of humans. And through this domestication we learn how to live and how to dream. In human domestication, the information from the outside dream is conveyed to the inside dream, creating a whole belief system. First the child is taught the names of things: Mom, Dad, milk, bottle. Day by day, at home, at school, at church, and from television, we are told how to live, what kind of behavior is acceptable. The outside dream teaches us how to be a human. We have a whole concept of what a “woman” is and what a “man” is. And we also learn to judge: We judge ourselves, judge other people, judge the neighbors.
Children are domesticated the same way that we domesticate a dog, a cat, or any other animal. In order to teach a dog we punish the dog and we give rewards. We train our children whom we love so much the same way we train any domesticated animal: with a system of punishment and reward.
We are told, “You’re a good boy,” or “You’re a good girl,” when we do what Mom and Dad want us to do. When we don’t we are “a bad girl” or “a bad boy.”
“When we went against the rules we were punished; when we went along with the rules we got a reward. We were punished many times a day, and we were also rewarded many times a day. Soon we became afraid of being punished and also afraid of not receiving the reward. The reward is the attention that we got from our parents or from other people like siblings, teachers, and friends. We soon develop a need to hook other people’s attention in order to get the reward.”The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
I read a lot of reviews online and most of the bad ones was about “domestication of children”. I have to disagree with them. What the author said is true. We do teach/train our children. When they are good they get praised and rewarded with affection, food, or money. If they do good in school or on the sport field we also reward them. When they are bad or do something not to our wishes we punish them. We take away their technology, activities, and friends they love, we confine them to their rooms. We call it discipline.
I do believe that discipline goes hand in hand with good manners and respect for yourself and others.
If I take my boys for example. Since they were small I taught them the value of respect and good manners. I had “a look” that I gave them when they stray from the straight and narrow. When they did good I rewarded them and they knew that I was very proud of them. When they did something wrong, I asked them why did they do it? I then explained to them why it is wrong and that every action has consequences.
Today I am a proud mother of two men with impeccable manners and who have respect for themselves and others.
If you have any thoughts on the above please feel free to email me or leave a comments.
With all my heart, thank you for your continued support.
Have a Blessed day.
