Save the Tie, Save a Child Fashion Show: Hein Smit

Hein Smit, one of our talented designers was part of the Save the Tie, Save a Child Fashion Show. His dresses made heads turn and one of the dresses was sold after the second show…. Months of work went into the design and making of these dresses. Many late nights and hundred’s of ties went into these master pieces.

Oostenberg Business Women Launch: 16 days of activism

I was invited to the launch of the Oostenberg Business Women. I always wanted to be part of an organization for business women but never knew how and what to do to be part of one.  Our first meeting was at Dione Lifestyle in Brackenfell.

Sunel Beeselaar one of our local  attorneys talked about different types of abuse. I never knew there was so many and that the worst kind of abuse is emotional abuse. The reason for this is you can’t show any scars and the emotional scars that you get takes a very long time to heal…

Erica Crous of the SAP talked about how to go about to get started and get out of an abusive relationship/marriage.  She also talked about women who just don’t want to get out even if all the resources are in place. Most of the time the women are afraid and due to their financial situation they stay in the abusive relationship. The most common reasons given are. ” I don’t have any money.” “I have nowhere to go.” “I don’t want to loose my children.”  All of these reasons sound legit when you say it to yourself, but there are people and places that are willing to help….

Adri Klindt of Huis Jabes talked to us about what they do and how they help victims of abuse.  She talked about some of the women who came to stay with them and who got out of the abusive relationship/marriage. Then she also told us that some of the ladies went back to their partners and the abusive relationship.

“We provide a temporary sanctuary for unlikely abuse victims

Huis Jabes, situated in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, provides a temporary home and rehabilitation centre to victims of family abuse who come from middle to high income communities. This includes physical, financial and emotional abuse. We provide meals, shelter, medical care, counselling and career guidance to empower these women to create a better future for themselves and their children.

Since our establishment in 2008, we have helped more than 400 women and children start the process of recovery and rehabilitation.” From the Huis Jabes Website

Save the Tie, Save a Child Fashion Show: Junior Models

Mrs Cape Town 2013 Chantal Witthuhn hosted the  Save the Tie, Save a Child Fashion show on 27/28 June 2014.  She had the idea of making outfits out of old and unused ties. When she asked me if I would be part of the team I just could not say no. What an experience it was and I have grown allot in the process. I helped collect ties, took photo’s at the meetings and had the honor to meet so many new people. The best of all was to see old ties transformed into gorgeous outfits and evening gowns….

The Junior Models and their Mothers  had approximately one week to design a dress out of the old and unused ties collected.  They did not disappoint at all and I must say I was super impressed once again.

Badenhorst Family Shoot Featuring on Website

A while back I got an email from Armand’s shooting coach and teacher. She wanted to book a family shoot for her and the three men in her life.

We went to Joostenberg Bistro on the R304 for their photo shoot. Of course I took Armand with to assist me with the shoot. We had a blast and laughed alot.  It took the oldest a while to warm up to the camera an in the end the boys were literally swinging in the trees….BFam133BFam66 BFam19 BFam120BFam126 BFam129

Wilken Family’s Vintage Shoot Featuring on Website

Danette contacted me one day and asked if I do vintage shoots… Well I never did one before but as you all know by now I never say no to learn something new…. First I panicked because what do I use for props? Then one afternoon I was dusting my show cabinet and there it was…. Old camera’s, my toy car my grandfather bought me when I was small, my Mother’s sewing machine from her childhood a old telephone my Father brought home one day and the list goes on….. In the end I had lot’s to choose from.

I hardly ever do set up’s for my shoots but after doing this Vintage shoot I think I’ll do it more often. I just have no idea where I am going to put all the props…. When it came to the editing of the shoot I did not do much I just played with the different effects.

I am very happy with the end results of this shoot

Strydom Family Shoot Featuring on Website

I met Natasha and her kids about three years back. I was very honored when she asked me to do their family portraits for them.

Normally children take a while to warm up to the camera, but not these two. They had their own ideas of how they would like to pose. The shoot was a breeze. Before we could blink the shoot was done.

Aquinnah’s Frozen Birthday Party featuring on Website

Aquinnah’s 4th birthday party was held at Weltevreden Wine Estate. The theme of the party was Frozen. Little Aquinnah looked like a real princess in the dress her grandmother made for her. If you asked Aquinnah if she is a princess she would just roll her big brown eyes, put her arms in her side and say. ” Oh no! I am Queen Anna!” She was not really into taking photo’s and she would not pose with anyone so I had to run around and make good use of my zoom lens.Aquin1 Aquin2 Aquin17

Stagecoach Somerset West featuring on website.

WOW I can’t believe that 5 months has gone by. Yes time do fly when you are busy. Well as they say never late than never.

Stagecoach Somerset West was one of the performing acts at the Save the Tie, Save a Child Fashion show. I enjoyed their performance allot and I was very impressed with the talents I saw. These kids and their coaches rock….

Here are just some background information I got from their website.

“If your child is creative and you have been looking at the various dance schools, drama classes and singing lessons available in the area, Stagecoach Somerset West is the answer. Stagecoach is more than just a stage school, theatre school or drama school: it is a full and rounded education, teaching life skills that build confidence and stretch imaginations. Every child needs an outlet for their natural creativity, and at Stagecoach, we nurture their sparks of inspiration and watch them grow over time into talents and confidence.  It may be that your child simply needs an opportunity to develop their self-esteem in a safe and nurturing environment, away from competitive social challenges. If you are looking for dance classes, singing lessons or acting classes for your child, Stagecoach Somerset West has it all … and all under one roof.”  Principal Melanie Williss.

The original plan for Zaide’s Matric Farewell shoot was to go to a farm on the Bottelary road, but unfortunately they ran late and we had to improvise.

I ended up taking some photo’s in a neighbours garden and in the driveway a few houses down the road. The wind was also acting up and we had to make it a quick session.

Lizette and her two prince’s featuring on website.

I launched a Mothers day competition in May month. My student Lizette was the lucky one who won a photo shoot with me. We had a ball and she got first hand experience on how it feels to be a client at my studio. AJ her oldest child loved posing for the camera, Janco on the other hand had to be bribed. In the end we got lovely photo’s of them and even Janco could not stop laughing….

Some History on the Augrabies Falls National Park. I got this from the parks website.

The name Augrabies was given to the Water Fale by a Swede, Hendrik Jakob Wikar, when he passed there in 1799.

The name is derived from the Nama word as the Khoi people would refer to “Aukoerebis” meaning the “Place of Great Noise.” This refers to the Orange River water thundering it’s way down the 56m spectacular main Water Fall.

Project 365 149a Project 365 149b Project 365 149c

Unfortunately the fall was not that spectacular when we went to visit. I must say I was very disappointed and as we drove in the park visiting the different view points I was hoping that the big one is still to come….  Project 365 149d

Something about Hyraxes….. Thank you Wikipedia…

Hyraxes are small, thickset, herbivorous mammals in the order Hyracoidea. Hyraxes are well-furred, rotund animals with short tails. Typically, they measure between 30 and 70 cm long and weigh between 2 and 5 kg. They are often mistaken for rodents, but are more closely related to elephants. Four species are recognised; the rock hyrax (Procavia capensis), the yellow-spotted rock hyrax (Heterohyrax brucei), the western tree hyrax (Dendrohyrax dorsalis) and the southern tree hyrax (Dendrohyrax arboreus). Their distribution is limited to Africa and the Middle East.
